COP30 has concluded: What happened during week two?

Here's everything you need to know about the key developments after the conclusion of COP30.

The UN’s annual climate conference has now concluded in Brazil. The second week covered the key themes of Forests, Oceans, and Biodiversity and Food, Agriculture, and Equity. A fragile climate deal was reached at the conclusion of COP, but fossil fuels were not mentioned in the final text and a roadmap on transitioning away from fossil fuels was not part of the deal.

What happened last week and what was in the final text?

1. Powering Past Coal Alliance commit to phasing out the resource

South Korea and Bahrain have joined the US, UK, France and Germany on the PPCA. With over 180 national and sub-national governments, businesses and organisations, they commit to removing the use of unabated coal and replacing it with clean energy. South Korea has the 7th largest coal fleet in the world but has now committed to phasing out by 2040.

2. Omission of fossil fuel transition from final text

Despite the above, there was no mention of fossil fuels or transition away from fossil fuels in the final text. This has come as a great disappointment to a number of countries. There is a roadmap, but this is voluntary and not legally binding.

3. Deforestation roadmap

90 countries backed a roadmap to end deforestation, something front and centre of a COP based in the Amazon, although it was not included in the final deal.

4. Funding for adaptation

The final text included a tripling in funds for adaptation to $120bn. The goal is encouraging but was pushed back from 2030 to 2035.

5. Just transition mechanism

There was an agreement on a just transition mechanism (JTM) which aims to put people and equity at the centre of the fight against climate change. Despite this, efforts to attach funding to this failed early in the talks.

6. Indigenous protest and new territories

Brazil has announced 10 new indigenous territories where indigenous peoples culture and their environments will be protected by Brazilian law. This comes as more than 200 human rights groups wrote to the UN saying that they were encouraging a crackdown on indigenous people at the climate talks.

7. Antalya announced as COP31 host

COP31 is due to take place in Türkiye after an agreement was reached with Australia. Although the conference will take place in Türkiye, the Australian climate minister will host. The Australian PM has said that pacific issues will be a focus.
