What do I need to know in the lead up to the COP30 climate conference?

COP30 is due to take place in Belém, Brazil, between 10th-21st November. Discussions will be had on climate change and the Paris Agreement.

What is COP? 

Conference of the Parties (COP) is the UN’s annual climate conference, where governments, scientists, NGOs and activists from across the world come together to discuss climate change, how to reduce emissions and on continuing the Paris Agreement, signed at COP21.  

When will COP30 be taking place? 

COP30 is the 30th iteration of the conference, taking place between 10th-21st November. Here is what we know so far:  

What is the COP30 location? 

COP30 is taking place in Belém, Brazil, the capital city of the state of Pará. Located in proximity to the Amazon rainforest and river, Belém offers a chance to discuss climate change close to one of the world’s most important ecological sites. 

What will be discussed? 

The COP30 agenda has already been published, with a schedule of discussion set out by the host nation. The themes are:  

  • Cities, Infrastructure & Water (Mon 10th – Tues 11th)
    Adaptation, Waste, Local Governments, Bioeconomy, Circular Economy, Science, Technology, and Artificial Intelligence. 
  • Human and Social Development (Weds 12th – Thurs 13th): 
    Health, Jobs, Education, Culture, Justice and human rights, Information integrity, and Workers. 
  • Energy, Finance & Transport (Fri 14th – Sat 15th)
    Trade, Finance, Carbon markets, and Non-CO₂ gases. 
  • Forests, Oceans, and Biodiversity (Mon 17th – Tues 18th)
    Small and medium entrepreneurs, Indigenous peoples, Local and traditional, communities, Children and youth 
  • Agriculture & Food Systems (Weds 19th – Thurs 20th)
    Food Security, Fisheries, Family Farming, Women and Gender, Afro-descendant and Tourism. 
  • Closing Statements (Fri 21st)

COP is the key climate conference run by the UN. Across the COP30 dates, decisions will be made on climate change and emissions that could affect your business.
