RTS metering service switches off this summer – what do you need to know?
It’s important to organise the replacement your RTS meters as soon as possible to avoid your portfolio being impacted by the switch-off.
The Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) metering service is set to end on 30 June 2025. These meters need to be replaced ahead of this date to avoid service disruption and excessive bills.
What are RTS meters?
Introduced in the 1980s, RTS meters were designed to support customers who may use electric storage systems and panel or immersion heaters in water tanks, which may typically heat up overnight.
There are RTS meters all over Great Britain, but especially in Scotland, northern England, the Midlands, North Wales and London.
Why are we talking about this?
RTS meters use long-wave radio signal to switch between peak and off-peak rates. This service has reached the end of its natural operational life and the radio signal, supporting infrastructure and systems will be shut down on 30 June, ending the service.
Meter upgrades are needed to ensure affected consumers – such as schools, businesses and housing association residents – are not left without heating or hot water or to find their heating is constantly on.
To avoid this disruption, suppliers are currently working with their clients to replace RTS meters with alternative metering arrangements.
However, Ofgem’s monitoring of supplier replacement rates has indicated slower progress than required – with many consumers expected to still be reliant on a RTS metering arrangement following the switch-off date.
As of January 2025, there were approximately 600,000 RTS meters remaining in Great Britain.
What is the latest?
In a recently closed consultation, Ofgem sought to introduce new RTS licence conditions under the Electricity Supply Licence to protect consumers from the risk of supply disruption and higher bills.
However, it’s important to organise the replacement your RTS meters as soon as possible to avoid your portfolio being impacted by the switch-off.
