How can you make the most out of the MHHS?
Organisations that embrace the MHHS will make the best of it – here are some ways to get started.
The Market-Wide Half-Hourly Settlement (MHHS) is one of the biggest overhauls of our electricity market since privatisation. Although most of the work is happening behind the scenes on the supplier side, any change of this magnitude can be daunting.
However, this new era of electricity use marks an unprecedented opportunity for organisations to harness the power of their data.
Organisations that embrace the MHHS will make the best of it – whether this means energy and carbon savings or making sure your metering solution or data visualisation tools are up to the challenge.
This means that now is the time to make sure your business will benefit from the upcoming changes. Here are some ways to get started.
How is your metering?
To put it short: You need a smart or an advanced meter to make the most out of the MHHS.
Once implemented, the MHHS is set to provide a detailed view of how much electricity is being consumed for every 30-minute period. Although all meters will be migrated to half-hourly settlement, your data will still only be read monthly or quarterly if you have a traditional meter.
An electricity meter is a powerful piece of technology. Not only does it record your consumption – directly impacting your costs and carbon footprint – but accurate and current metering data forms the foundation of your organisational decision-making.
Whether you seek to cut down wastage or costs, optimise your energy use or create carbon savings, tracking when and how your organisation uses energy is crucial.
What does MHHS mean for my metering?
The practicalities around the MHHS depend on your metering arrangements. It changes the way metering data is collected, which means that businesses will have a chance to appoint a metering partner based on your specific requirements.
For example, businesses with Half-Hourly meters currently use Meter Operators (MOPs), Data Collectors (DCs) and Data Aggregators (DAs).
Following MHHS roll-out, these businesses will need to arrange contracts for Metering Services Smart (MSS) or Metering Services Advanced (MSA), as well as Smart Data Services (SDS) or Advanced Data Services (ADS).
This can seem like a staggering task – especially if you have a large or complex portfolio – but it can also present an opportunity. Choosing competitively priced services that offer added value in this new era of how electricity is used and accounted for is key.
How can Inspired help you?
Inspired’s metering experts can help ensure your electricity portfolio is MHHS-ready — with the right data, processes and visibility to unlock smarter decisions and lower costs.
We can focus on a few key areas initially to maximise readiness, reduce risk, and enable early value realisation:
- Audit and cleanse MPAN data: Ensure accurate linkage of MPANs to metering assets, including meter types, the ability of a smart meter and its associated communication hub to transmit and receive data, and configurations.
- Identify non-compliant meters: Flag and prioritise sites where smart or advanced meters are non-functional, have issues in communicating and transmitting readings, or are incapable of delivering half-hourly data.
- Boost install/commissioning Quality Assurance: Ensure new installs meet the half-hourly-readiness standard (e.g., SMETS2, AMR with comms, etc.).
Inspired can help ensure your electricity portfolio is fully prepared for the transition to MHHS – from metering readiness and data quality through to strategic insight and future-proofed operations. Together, we’ll turn regulatory change into commercial advantage.
My metering is up to scratch – now what?
Now is the time to turn all this data into meaningful insights that you can use to inform your energy decision-making.
An online platform can help you visualise your energy use, so you can track your consumption, compare sites and pinpoint any wastage.
These insights can then be presented to your organisation’s key decision makers to showcase your consumption, support a business case for energy efficiency investments and demonstrate the progress of your efficiency efforts.
Inspired offers access to dynamic energy dashboards and online tools, available through our Unify platform.
Whether you need support with your metering arrangements or making the most of your data, our experts are here to support you.
