Inspired Energy attends Climate Change Committee and All Party Parliamentary Group for Net-Zero Event

Inspired PLC recently attended the Climate Change Committee and All Party Parliamentary Group for Net-Zero Evening Reception on Wednesday 29^th June to mark the Climate Change Committee’s 2022 net-zero progress report to Parliament.

Climate Change Committee 2022 Net- Zero Progress Report

The Annual Net-Zero Progress Report Reception was held jointly by the All Party Parliamentary Group for Net-Zero, of which Inspired Energy is a sponsor, and the Government’s independent advisors on climate change, the Climate Change Committee.

Speeches at the Reception were made by Rt Hon Theresa May MP, who during her Premiership enshrined the net-zero commitment into UK law, Rt Hon Ed Miliband MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Climate Change and Net-Zero, Rt Hon Lord Deben, Chair of the Climate Change Committee, and Alex Sobel MP, Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Net-Zero.

The Climate Change Committee is clear in its report that although targets to reduce emissions are in place, tangible progress towards meeting these targets is lagging. All speakers emphasised that emissions reduction should be factored into decision-making across the whole of Government, not just certain departments. Ed Miliband spoke of going green as the right economic choice, not just the right moral choice and cited a report by the Office of Budgetary Responsibility which he said made it clear that delaying tackling climate change will cost us more in the long run.

Theresa May said that Government, business and the public all needed to work together to meet emissions targets and in many ways, business was a lot further ahead than Government in addressing climate change, as they are increasingly seeing economic opportunities. Government needed to provide consistency and certainty for business and that light regulation would create a level playing field in tendering, for example. Both Theresa May and Ed Miliband felt engaging the public in conversation about everyday actions people could take to reduce emissions was important, as this could encourage much-needed behaviour change.
