Could you generate your own power?

On-site generation is an increasingly popular choice for businesses - but which technology is right for you?

Supply uncertainty and energy crisis price shocks have led businesses to seek new ways to future-proof their operations. Resultingly, onsite generation is surging in popularity – for a good reason.

Generating your own energy allows your organisation to power your operations with renewable electricity and be less dependent on the UK grid while cutting down your carbon footprint.

However, on-site generation will work differently for each organisation. Therefore, it’s vital to assess the most beneficial solution based on your premises, requirements and goals. With this in mind, let’s look at some of the technologies available.

How about heat pumps?

Air and ground source heat pumps can be used for heating and cooling alike. Incredibly efficient in optimal conditions, the pumps can produce up to three units of heat energy for every unit of power consumed – providing your business with heating, hot water and energy savings.

What about solar panels?

Solar panels convert direct and indirect sunlight into electricity through the photovoltaic (PV) cells in solar panels – and could help reduce your bills by 30%.

One of the simplest technologies to install, solar panels can be mounted either on roofs or on the ground.

Have you heard of Combined Heat and Power?

Combined heat and power (CHP) or ‘cogeneration’ uses natural gas, biogas or hydrogen to produce electricity, hot water and space heating.

Not only could you save between 20% and 40% on your energy costs, installing CHP bolsters your energy efficiency while reducing your reliance on the grid.

What if on-site generation is not possible for me?

You could consider a Corporate Power Purchase Agreement (CPPA) instead.

A long-term energy contract between a corporate customer and a renewable power generator/developer, CPPAs are becoming a popular choice for organisations seeking to decarbonise.

If you have a CPPA, the energy you use can be traced back to a specific renewable energy project, such as a wind or solar farm, which feeds an equivalent amount of power into the grid. This means your premises and the project in question can be located at opposite ends of the country.

How can Inspired help?

Inspired is an end-to-end solution provider – we will not only install the on-site technology but manage the changes to your supply contracts, bills and grid connections as well.

Would you like to see an example? We recently designed, supplied and installed a solar PV project at dnata’s facility near Heathrow Airport, alongside providing ongoing support for their goal to reduce carbon emissions by 50% by 2030.
