Wholesale water price increases – what do I need to know?
Although wholesale water prices are due to rise from 1 April 2025, there are ways to save on your water bills.
From 1 April 2025 wholesale water prices are due to rise by 20% on average, with some areas and tariffs affected up to as much as 50%.
Why are prices increasing?
This announcement is part of Ofwat’s 2024 Price Review (PR24), which will determine water prices for the 2025-2030 period.
Price, investment and service form part of the review, which is set every five years by the regulator Ofwat for England and Wales. Wholesale charges from 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026, along with final PR24 determinations, were published earlier this year.
Inspired’s analysis of these new prices indicates a higher overall increase than previously anticipated in many regions, with around a 20% average increase.
Your water costs will rise from April, even if you are on contracted rates, this is because contracts are structured on a “wholesale plus basis”.
How can Inspired help?
Inspired’s water team has a range of different measures to help you save on water bills, including:
- Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) to allow for remote data collection and monitoring, helping businesses detect leaks or inefficiencies more quickly.
- A water audit, which will analyse your consumption, supplier agreements and tariffs. This can help you recoup any overpayments in addition to gaining the insight that you need to lower water usage and reduce your carbon footprint – you could save an average of 10-15% on water bills.
Measuring your water usage is key to understanding where savings can be made as you can’t manage what you can’t measure!
One in three water bills contain an inaccuracy meaning that you could have been overpaying for years.
