Colpac Ltd - Manufacturer- Sustainability credentials

Colpac

Inspired PLC assists Colpac with net-zero targets and strategy.

Background

Colpac is an award-winning British designer and manufacturer of innovative and sustainable food packaging solutions.

With a focus on sustainability, Colpac’s products are designed to consider all points within the supply chain.

Eager to establish Science-Based Targets and reduce its carbon footprint, Colpac sought assistance from Inspired PLC.

Colpac wanted to lead the way for SMEs in developing and implementing net-zero programmes.

The Challenge

Colpac proactively wanted to measure and understand its carbon footprint. The team wanted to let Science-Based Targets align with their ambition, support customer goals, and inspire change.

To achieve this, Colpac had to initiate emission reduction efforts within its means as an SME.

The Solution

After considering Colpac’s aspirations for reducing emissions and wanting to measure its carbon footprint accurately, Inspired’s experts decided that the best plan would be to take full Scope 1, 2 and 3 carbon footprint assessments, deliver a net-zero workshop, and provide net-zero strategy services. Seven months into the partnership with Inspired, Colpac also decided to raise its ambition by seeking validation of its targets from the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

The Results

Consumption reduction: Inspired’s analysis identified opportunities for efficiency in Colpac’s third-party logistics, in relation to deliveries of no-perishable packaging. Colpac has since collaborated with key customers to optimise delivery schedules. Colpac achieved a remarkable 22% reduction in carbon emissions in year three of its net-zero programme, reducing emissions across several key areas.

Rapid implementation: Two years of full Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions were calculated in less than six months.

Recognition and compliance: Colpac’s dedication to sustainable practices was recognised through the company’s inclusion on the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) website. This signifies Colpac’s commitment to setting emission reduction targets in line with global standards that limit warming to 1.5 degrees.

Promoting their success: In September 2023, Colpac partnered with Inspired to showcase their achievements at the esteemed Sustainability Live event. Representatives from Colpac and Inspired discussed how small and medium enterprises can explore practical strategies to achieve sustainability goals, emphasising Colpac’s proactive approach to sustainability. Throughout 2024, Colpac and Inspired PLC have worked together to promote the net-zero programme, being sought out as experts to speak on panels and provide editorial contributions to key trade media.

What’s Next

Inspired and Colpac continue working together to implement Colpac’s net-zero strategy and work towards net-zero targets. Work has also begun on improving the data quality for Scope 3 calculations in time for Colpac’s emissions measurement in 2024. Following year 3 results, Inspired PLC will work with Colpac to re-establish its baseline data and recalculate its net-zero targets to reflect ambition.
