Green skills have been defined by Parliament as “the knowledge, abilities, values and attitudes needed to live in, develop and support a society which reduces the impact of human activity on the environment.” These skills are crucial for driving the transition to a low-carbon economy, especially as the world faces the pressing threat of climate change, biodiversity loss and the increasing regulatory demands of ESG reporting.

We need a skilled workforce equipped with the knowledge and tools to drive sustainable solutions and without the right education, skills, and jobs, realising these global ambitions set at COP29 will be challenging.

The importance of green skills to be embedded at the core of every business is ever increasing, sustainability is no longer a mere add-on; it has become a core component of many organisations’ strategies and is essential to integrate into the very fabric of an organisation’s operations and decision-making processes. This increasing demand for sustainable solutions has created a growing need for individuals with the necessary expertise.

Some of the most important green skills include:

· Renewable Energy Expertise: Understanding and applying renewable energy technologies, including solar, wind, and hydro power, along with the technical know-how for design, installation, operation, maintenance, and optimisation.

· Energy Efficiency: Knowledge of energy-saving practices and technologies, such as building efficiency and smart grids.

· ESG reporting: This area necessitates a thorough understanding of complex environmental, social and governance remits, regulations, and standards to ensure compliance, mitigate financial risks, and safeguard reputation.

· Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation: Expertise in climate change impacts, adaptation strategies, and mitigation techniques.

· Environmental Management: Proficiency in environmental law, regulations, standards (e.g., ISO 14001:2015), and operational controls, including energy, waste management, and environmental impact assessments.

· Circular Economy: Understanding the principles of circular economy, encompassing waste reduction, recycling, and reuse.

· Industry-Specific Knowledge: For instance, in agriculture, this includes expertise in sustainable farming practices like organic farming, precision agriculture, and agroforestry.

To upskill a workforce with green skills will require significant investment in time, resource, and money. This investment, however, is crucial to navigate the ever-evolving ESG landscape to ensure that the workforce is equipped with the necessary knowledge to implement the practical solutions required.

Forming partnerships in the sustainability field can also provide valuable insights, knowledge sharing, and opportunities for collaboration. By prioritising green skills development and implementing sustainable strategies, organisations can not only contribute to environmental protection but also drive innovation, enhance their reputation, and gain a competitive edge in the global market.
