Making every drop count: water efficiency opportunities in hospitality

Small changes can lead to big water and cost savings for hospitality businesses.

Across the UK, an estimated three billion litres of water are wasted through unmanaged leaks every single day.

In hospitality, where water runs through almost every part of the business, from kitchens to pools to grounds, that scale of potential wastage means genuine opportunity for savings.

With World Water Week 2026 shining a spotlight on “Water for People and Progress”, here’s where hospitality businesses could uncover savings – area by area.

Dive straight into savings at the pool

Pool covers reduce evaporation and heat loss, creating water, energy, and cost savings all at once.

Reusing backwash water from filter systems can recover up to 95% of water that would otherwise be lost, while cutting chemical costs too.

Savings are on tap in your restrooms

In restrooms, pressure-reducing or aerator valves can cut tap flow from over 5 litres a minute to just 1.9.

Grey water recycling systems can reuse lightly used water for non-potable purposes like irrigation and toilet flushing, while devices like hippo bags reduce the water used with each flush.

Have a blast saving water in food preparation areas

Food preparation areas often need full-power cleaning, but aerator devices can still save an average of 2 litres per hand wash.

Reusing water in cooling towers, through closed-loop systems or treated blowdown water, also cuts the fresh water needed for air conditioning.

Save up for a rainy day outside your building

Large roof spaces can be used to harvest rainwater for non-potable uses like irrigation and vehicle washing.

Smart, weather-based irrigation systems can cut watering needs further, especially when fed by treated grey water or reused wastewater.

Don’t let droplets become downpours across your portfolio

Monitoring equipment allows you to benchmark performance between sites, demonstrate impact to stakeholders, and strengthen sustainability reporting.

Consolidating water contracts under one retailer simplifies billing and reduces admin time, while regular bill validation ensures accuracy across differing tariffs and charges.

How can Inspired help?

ATG Entertainment saw the ripple effect of Inspired’s water expertise first-hand.

Switching to a more suitable water retailer improved pricing and service.

In turn, trialling leak detection technology gave ATG much clearer visibility into consumption, wastage, and potential leaks, with a rollout now underway across eligible venues in their estate.
