A day in the life
Want to know more about working at Inspired?
I’m a Director within the ESG team, which covers a broad range of responsibilities supporting our clients with their ESG requirements. Alongside this, I work with our internal delivery teams to turn those requirements into practical, deliverable outcomes.
ESG stands for Environmental, Social and Governance – it’s a framework to measure an organisation’s sustainability, ethical impact and management processes.
There are numerous voluntary and mandatory ESG reporting regulations and standards. The ESG team supports our clients to navigate their reporting obligations, develop practical ESG strategies, and communicate their performance to stakeholders.
My role can broadly be split into four main areas:
- People management: I manage a team of 12 ESG Analysts who are responsible for delivering projects and day-to-day support for our clients. I assist with delivery and contract questions and support my team’s wider career development.
- Contract management: I have oversight of ~100 ESG clients – I’m the main point of contact for renewals, upsell opportunities and contract queries. I hold regular contract review meetings to gain client feedback on our services and I’m also the point of escalation if delivery teams have technical queries.
- Sales: Like other ESG Directors I support our Sales team with new opportunities, working with the business development managers and account managers to showcase Inspired’s ESG expertise to new and existing clients. This includes joining sales calls, supporting with bids, attending in-person presentations and events, costing delivery and writing proposals.
- Product Development: Each ESG Director is responsible for managing several ESG products. This involves regularly reviewing the relevant legislation and reporting requirements, updating reports and calculation methodologies, and creating new products and processes to bolster compliance.
There is never a dull day! ESG covers such a broad spectrum of topics that there is always something new and interesting to learn about. Our services develop and evolve with new legislation, requirements and demand, and the breadth of themes we cover is one of the things I enjoy most about my role.
I used to work in a construction company and was first exposed to ESG through my work as a bid writer.
As I learnt more about how ESG drives corporate accountability, I decided it was an area I wanted to work in. I was fortunate enough to be offered a role in the sustainability team at that same company, where I learned more about the wide variety of ESG frameworks and reporting requirements.
After spending some time working in-house on predominantly net-zero projects, I decided to broaden my horizons and move into ESG consultancy.
“Don’t let the logistics of change outweigh the opportunities it can create” – as someone who has made several changes in both career and life, I am a big advocate of this advice. Considering a significant life change can seem daunting and overwhelming, but the work involved is often worth it in the long run.
I live in Edinburgh with my husband, we moved to Scotland last year after several years in the Midlands. Before we moved north, we took a year-long sabbatical and travelled all though Southeast Asia, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand – it was an incredible trip!
Day to day, I enjoy hiking (currently making the most of easy access to the Pentlands) and visiting friends and family. I also like to draw when I have a spare moment, which mainly involves creating cartoon cards or doing still life sketches.
