Farming and agriculture
Sewing the seeds to a Net-Zero future
Farming & Agriculture accounts for 10% of the UK’s total Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and plays a vital role in our transition to Net-Zero. Evolving farming practices to cleaner alternatives, requires changes throughout the supply chain, production of food and livestock to support decarbonisation and reducing operational energy costs.
Many Farming & Agriculture businesses may find they have limited access to technology as well as funding and a lack of scale, which can make the transition to greener operations more challenging. Whilst it’s widely known that farming contributes to a large proportion of GHG emissions, it’s currently not well understood and if they are unable to be addressed, they are likely to continue to increase over time.
There have been challenges around the supply chain that significantly affected Farming & Agriculture businesses. Increasing the concern for global food security, with excessive labour shortages and a shift in consumer demand for ‘just in time’ supply chains and logistics putting increasing pressure on businesses throughout the supply chain.
For these businesses, making the switch to greener farming practices as early as possible can help support and perhaps accelerate the transition to Net-Zero. Alongside the technology for disease resistance, carbon sequestration, efficiency enhancements and entering the alternative protein market could also drive investment in new technologies and market opportunities.
